Sponsored by the Mississippi Physicians Care Network, this award honors the memory of Dr. Waites, a long-time family physician in Laurel, member of the School of Medicine Class of 1958, and role model for countless students in the compassionate care of patients.

Thomas Brooks, Jr. Preventive Medicine Award

Established in honor of Dr. Thomas J. Brooks, Jr., first chairman of the Department of Preventive Medicine, and sponsored by a former faculty member, the award is given annually to a medical student who has demonstrated academic excellence in public health/preventive medicine-related coursework and who has shown continued involvement at the Jackson Free Clinic or medicine efforts and programs in Mississippi and/or global and international health activities.

Excellence in Public Health Award

Established by the Department of Health and Human Services to recognize medical studentsโ€™ contributions to public health. Nominated by the institution and selected by the United States Public Health Service, this award is presented to a student who demonstrates leadership, hard work, passion, and dedication to improving the health of their community.

Virginia Stansel Tolbert Award

This award is given to a medical student who has demonstrated superior scholarship and leadership in campus activities. Additionally, the recipient must exhibit interest in issues which affect the profession and willingness to devote time and effort to those matters.

Dr. Joyce Olutade Chief Student Clinician Award

Given to a medical student who has led a team at the Jackson Free Clinic 8+ times in the M3 and M4 years.

Phi Kappa Phi Initiates

Medical students in the top 10 percent of their graduating class are eligible for membership in this national honorary scholastic fraternity.
