The induction ceremony for the inaugural Academy for Excellence in Education was held August 23, 2022. Nine faculty from the Department of Medicine were inducted into the inaugural class.

The Trailblazer Teaching Award recognizes educators who have demonstrated a record of innovating, engaging, and inspiring others through their service to students in the School of Medicine.  Ten faculty were awarded this year from the Department of Medicine.

Congratulations to the many trainees and faculty who presented or presided at the Southern Regional Meeting and Southern Society of General Internal Medicine meetings last month in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Dr. Beverly “Gwen” Windham has been appointed to the Clinical Neuroscience and Neurodegeneration Study Section at the Center for Scientific Review by the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Kimberly C. Tarver has been named Division Director of Geriatrics. Dr. Tarver obtained her BS in Chemistry from Millsaps College and then completed medical school, internal medicine residency, and geriatrics fellowship at UMMC. Dr. Tarver follows in the footsteps of Dr. Mark Meeks, a leader in the department who has served as Division Director of Geriatrics for 28 years.

Dr. Beverly “Gwen” Windham was selected as a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA), the nation’s largest interdisciplinary organization devoted to the field of aging. The status of Fellow — the highest class of membership within the Society — is an acknowledgment of outstanding and continuing work in gerontology.

The Department of Medicine considers teaching excellence an important mission. Congratulations to our many faculty and residents who have recently been selected for various teaching awards throughout the campus.
