Congratulations to the many trainees and faculty who presented or presided at the Southern Regional Meeting and Southern Society of General Internal Medicine meetings last month in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Congratulations to all who matched into the department’s fellowship programs this month! Nine fellowships matched 23 residents who will begin their fellowships in July 2022.
Vikas Majithia, MD, MPH, Professor of Medicine and Division Director of Rheumatology, will be leaving UMMC next month. We appreciate his 20 years of service to UMMC. In light of his leaving, the following appointments have been made in the Department:
– Gailen Marshall to serve as interim Division Director of Rheumatology
– Jimmy Stewart appointed Vice Chair of Faculty Development for the Department of Medicine
– John Spurzem named Chair of the Department of Medicine Promotion and Tenure Committee

Self-proclaimed computer nerd and Allergy and Immunology fellow Dr. Charles Grogan talks about training in Mississippi, COVID and telemedicine, and why he loves UMMC.
Dr. Patricia Stewart, Associate Professor and Fellowship Program Director of Allergy and Immunology, is leading a research project focused on improving asthma control. The study will use a remote monitoring protocol and will be in collaboration with UMMC’s Telemedicine Center of Excellence and the Health Resources and Services Administration.

UMMC is partnering with the National Center for Natural Products Research and has been awarded a nearly-$6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health.
