Fellow Focus: Dr. Andy Nutting

Meet Dr. Andy Nutting, PGY-4 pulmonary and critical care fellow. Here, he shares some wisdom he’s learned in training, his Harry Potter house, and what he loves about UMMC.

First, tell us about you.

My name is Andy and I am a first year pulmonary/critical care (PCCM) fellow. I completed medical school at LMU-DCOM, then residency at Brookwood Baptist Health where I also completed my chief residency. PCCM is my dream and I am honored to be here. I live with my fiancรฉ, Andrew (yes, we have the same name..). We have 3 cats and a dog.

When did you know you wanted to pursue pulmonary/critical care?

In the middle of a code my 4th year of med school, my mentor walked up to me and said, โ€œyou didnโ€™t think youโ€™d enjoy this as much as you are, eh?โ€ I enjoy the complexity, the difficulty, being there for patients and family during the most difficult times in life, and the pathophysiology.

What do you like most about UMMC?

The family atmosphere is unparalleled. There’s a reason this was my top choice and I am thrilled to have this opportunity.

What advice would you give to the interns?

Take your time. Ask questions. This is your opportunity to make mistakes and grow. Because once residency is done then who helps correct your mistakes? You. Be gracious, patient, and compassionate.

What could you give a 40 minute presentation on without preparation?

Bronchiectasis, it really is the Highway 280 of obstructive pulmonary disease.

What is something you wish you knew more about?

POCUS, it is a language in and of itself. Slowly learning, but always pursuing more.

What are some small things that make your day better?

Smiles. Holding the door for others. Random acts of kindness. Compassion. Empathy. Altruism.

Tell us something about you that most people donโ€™t know.

I love to 3D print, I play DND, Iโ€™m a proud slytherin (donโ€™t judge, so was Merlin!), love video games. ๐Ÿ™‚
