Get to know Dr. Jason Thomas, Georgia native, houseplant specialist, and internal medicine intern.
Tell us about you.
I was born in New York but was raised in Georgia since the age of 4, so I consider myself a Georgian at heart. I grew up in McDonough, Georgia. I attended college at the University of Georgia (Go Dawgs!), majoring in Biology and minoring in Public Health. I attended medical school at the Medical College of Georgia.
Why did you choose UMMC for residency?
I was initially drawn to UMMC by the patient population and the opportunity to help care for and learn from a primarily disadvantaged patient population. During the 2022 residency interview trail, UMMC stood out by its friendly faculty and vast opportunity to work with different specialists. My first time in Jackson was visiting the hospital campus during a second look, which essentially sealed the deal.
What could you give a 40-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?
I could take a lecture hall on a deep dive about houseplants!
What are some small things that make your day better?
A cup of coffee to get the day going and a small workout whenever I can fit it into the week.
What profession would you have chosen if you werenโt a physician?
I would have been an architect. I loved drawing and building with Legos growing up. Iโve also gotten into shows like โHomeโ and โGrand Designs,โ so architecture would have been right up my alley.
