Dr. Patrick Sanchez completed medical school, residency, and fellowship at UMMC. Here, Dr. Sanchez shares about his time at UMMC and what he’s up to now.
First, tell us about you and your time at UMMC.
I was born and raised in Hattiesburg,ย MS, where I attended the University of Southern Mississippi before completing medical school, internal medicine residency, and a gastroenterology fellowship, all at UMMC. During my time in Jackson, my two oldest girls, Nora and Natalie, were born. After wrapping up my studies at UMMC, I moved back to Hattiesburg, where myย twinย girls, Luna and Emery, and son, Jude, were born. Nora, now 8, Natalie 6, Luna and Emery 3, and Jude 1, are my greatest joys and accomplishments.ย We enjoy our days playing soccer, riding bikes, making up games, and fishing. I also enjoy coaching my kidsโ soccer teams as well as playing piano, running, playing tennis and golf, and other outdoor activities like fishing and hunting. We areย members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.ย ย
Where are you now and what are you doing?
Upon completing my fellowship, I returned to Hattiesburg and was hired by Hattiesburg GI Associates.ย I joined four incredibly hard-working partners who have been in practice between 14 and 32 years. I could not be more fortunate than to have been offered a job at this practice in my chosen area of expertise and with this extraordinary group of colleagues.ย
What do you miss most about UMMC?
What I miss most about UMMC is the camaraderie of the residents and fellows. From signouts in the lounge after long days on call to covering the ICU during the Christmas holidays, the hard work was always rewarding and the long days of residency and fellowship were a struggle that we shared and rarely complained about. We felt we were part of something special, a vocation to which we were called. This made it easy to work with each other and for each other.
Share a memory of your time here at UMMC.
One of my favorite memories from my time at UMMC was in the continuity clinic with Dr. Swink Hicks. He helped me understand how to practice medicine with colleagues and have fun. He challenged us to think outside the box, look at the big picture, take care of the patient, and have fun doing it.ย He was truly an extraordinary man and physician and is greatly missed.ย
