Hear from UMMC alumnus and Atlanta native Dr. Eric Davis about his time in Jackson and what he’s up to now.
Tell us about you and your time at UMMC.
My name is Eric Davis and I am a native of Atlanta (College Park). Most folks know that I am a huge UGA supporter (Go Dawgs!) and have been glued to the TV on most fall Saturdays since undergrad. I actually worked in pharmaceutical sales prior to going to medical school. This experience provided an interesting perspective now that I am on the other side of the handshake. I really enjoy chatting it up with the reps. I met my wife at Meharry Medical College, where we both matriculated. My better half is a practicing dentist. I completed Internal Medicine residency and GI Fellowship at UMMC from 2011-2017. Afterwards, my family and I returned to Atlanta, where we currently reside. We have two amazing boys; Carson and Evan.
Where are you now?
I am employed with United Digestive (formerly East Atlanta Gastro) as a partner with the group. We have practices throughout the southeast; however, my offices are located in Conyers and Covington, GA. I have been with the company since finishing my fellowship. I enjoy bread and butter GI, daily interactions with clinic patients, but I also find myself relishing in the more complex procedures such as ERCPs. In my spare time, I am chasing both boys to Lacrosse practice, trying to sneak in a round of golf after work, or enjoying date night with my bride.
What do you miss most about UMMC?
What I miss most about UMMC are the interactions with my colleagues both during and after work. Spades parties at Justin Turner’s house, intramural basketball tournaments with Ryan Brown, Cup’s runs with Lyssa Weatherly, golf tournaments with Brandon Garriga and Scoot Saul or a weekend dinner at Babalu’s with Izu Obi, Walter Beard and Dr. Haynes. The experiences were priceless.

When I first came to UMMC, I was late for my interview because the water at the hotel did not work. I called Cheryl Moss and told her that I would be late. Sensing my panic, she simply said to relax and get here when you can. It kind of set the tone for what I encountered during my entire residency; a camaraderie amongst my cohorts and staff that was unmatched. Bias alert…my residency class and program director Vince Herrin were the best ever. I remember vividly on one occasion, Michael Ted Boler and I were on a cardiology rotation and had to cover 30-35 patients on our weekend call. Our attending; who never gave compliments to residents(lol), was so impressed with our rounds and presentations that he offered to write letters of recommendations for us. We still talk about that weekend to this day. UMMC was hands down better than I expected and everything that I wanted. I am thankful for the opportunity to be a part of the family.
