Dr. Samer Mehio is in his sixth year of training at UMMC, with one more left to go. Here, Dr. Mehio shares his path to cardiology, UMMC, and what makes him tick.
First, tell us about you.
I am currently a 3rd year Cardiology fellow. I will be doing interventional cardiology training next year at UMMC as well. I was born and raised in Beirut, Lebanon before moving to Florida in 2007. I completed internal medicine residency at UMMC. I am a big Florida State sports fan. I met my wife at Florida State and we have been married for 6 years now. We have the best and most beautiful 2 year old girl, Eliza Grace. We love to travel and explore the world, Eliza traveled to 4 countries (France, Spain, Ireland, and Mexico) before her 2nd birthday.
When did you know you wanted to pursue cardiology?
Early on in medical school. The decision was really solidified after starting internal medicine residency at UMMC and meeting my current mentors. It is by far the best specialty, not up for debate.
What do you like most about UMMC?
Definitely the people I work with. I know it is a common answer, but it is the reason I have been here for 6+ years of training.
What advice would you give to the interns?
Work hard, be around, and be interested/eager to learn. No one expects you to know and have all the answers.
What could you give a 40 minute presentation on without preparation?
Football. Soccer. Cars.
But really, my wife and I have talked about making a blog for traveling with kids.
What is something you wish you knew more about?
Oh man, this changes so frequently. As I am typing this out, the answer is potty training.
What are some small things that make your day better?
Eliza yelling daddy and running in for hug after a long day of work – best feeling in the world.
Tell us something about you that most people don’t know.
This one is tough. Everyone knows I am an open book. I guess most people do not know that English is my 3rd language. So please excuse all grammar and spelling mistakes.
