W. Fowler Joiner, Jr., MD

Residency: Internal Medicine, UMMC

Chief Residency: Internal Medicine, UMMC

Division: General Internal Medicine

Tell us about yourself. I was raised in the country straddling the Alabama-Tennessee state line by a family of high school educators. I attended Samford University with the expectation of becoming a pharmacist before following my heart into medicine. After graduating from medical school at UAB, I matched into residency at UMMC where I met my amazing wife, Sarah (the far better Dr. Joiner), who practices as an endocrinologist at the Jackson VA Medical Center. We have two young boys and are excited about a little girl on the way. I am currently working to grow my backyard BBQ repertoire and will be happy to teach all five verses of “Rocky Top” to anyone who’s interested.

What are you most looking forward to working at UMMC? I am excited to work alongside and learn from many colleagues and mentors from my residency years. I also look forward to watching the growth of trainees as they progress through their internal medicine experiences with us.

Rachana Marathi, MD

Residency: Internal Medicine, Texas Tech University Health Sciences

Fellowship: Rheumatology, UMMC

Division: Rheumatology

Tell us about yourself. I am originally from India, but now I call Mississippi my home. After residency, I worked as a hospitalist in few places in the south, including UMMC. I love spending time with my family and friends. I enjoy traveling, cooking, and gardening.

What are you most looking forward to working at UMMC? I’m excited to be part of the Rheumatology Division. I love to educate and focus on being a good clinician. My interests are inflammatory arthritis and I’m hoping to establish dedicated clinics including care for patients with resistant gouty arthritis.

Elizabeth Picciola, MD

Residency: Internal Medicine, UMMC

Division: Hospital Medicine

Tell us about yourself. I grew up in south Louisiana along the bayou and next to the Mississippi River. My family is Cajun French with deep Louisiana roots. I went to Louisiana State University for undergrad and medical school. I met my husband Adam VanDenLangenberg in medical school who is currently an ophthalmology resident here at UMMC. We welcomed a daughter named Margot last year. We enjoy evening walks after work with our dog, Reese. Also, any opportunity we have during the Fall, we travel down to Baton Rouge to cheer on our beloved LSU Tigers in Death Valley.

What are you most looking forward to working at UMMC? To continue to learn from the patients at UMMC and work with some of my best friends.

Meredith Sloan, MD

Residency: Internal Medicine, UMMC

Chief Residency: Internal Medicine, UMMC

Fellowship: Pulmonary and Critical Care, UMMC

Division: Pulmonary and Critical Care

Tell us about yourself. I’m originally from South Carolina but I like to say I’m making a sweep
of the south after spending time in Virginia during undergrad, back to South Carolina for medical school and then to Mississippi for my graduate medical
training. I love teaching and I’m excited about being able to contribute to the education of both residents and fellows. Outside of the hospital, I’ve been
busy training two new golden retriever puppies (Trace and Pearl). Can’t wait until they’re big enough to go on a run with me!

What are you most looking forward to working at UMMC? I love the culture at UMMC, especially the collegiality and supportive environment, but also the strive to continue to better our care for patients. I hope to be as good an advocate and mentor for the trainees I work with as the faculty I’ve been lucky enough to have along the way.

Raj Tumma, MD

Residency: Internal Medicine, LSU Health Sciences Center – UHC in Lafayette, Louisiana

Division: Hospital Medicine

Tell us about yourself. I was born and brought up in India. I did my residency at LSU Lafayette in Internal Medicine. I began my career as a primary care physician in rural Louisiana then moved on as a hospitalist. I like to play badminton, watch fooball and spend time with family and friends.

What are you most looking forward to working at UMMC? I am excited about the opportunity to work with residents here at UMMC which gives me professional satisfaction.
