Resident Spotlight: Dr. Addie Hitt

Get to know Dr. Addie Hitt, internal medicine/pediatrics PGY-2 resident and soon-to-be-wife. Here, she shares about her Mississippi roots (and restaurant!) and what led her to pursue residency training at UMMC.

Tell us about you.
I grew up in the tiny town of Mooreville, Mississippi in northeast MS. I went to undergrad at Mississippi State and got a degree in biochemistry. I finished medical school at UMMC in 2024. Many of my classmates from MSU biochem have been my friends through med school and are now my co-residents!!

Why did you choose UMMC for residency?
It is really easy to say that I chose UMMC because of the people, because the faculty, staff, and residents make this place incredible. However, through my time in medical school, I loved working with our patient population! They are so special and kind and it is a joy to care for them. As someone who plans to practice long-term in our state, it only seems right to learn about Mississippi’s people from Mississippi’s people!

Tell us about a memorable experience from training.
I got to take care of a patient who was 30 weeks pregnant in the MICU. Because of the severity of her condition, she had to deliver early and our team was in the OR for her c-section to make sure she was stable. (I attached a picture from the OR lol) About a week after delivery, myself and her nurse got to take her to the NICU to meet her baby for the first time. It was super special. (and felt very med-peds):)

What could you give a 40-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?
I could give a no-prep course on running a restaurant! My family owns a little mom and pop in my hometown where I grew up waiting tables and helping my family run the business! It was a super unique way to grow up and taught me skills I use daily as a physician.

What are some small things that make your day better?
My favorite things to turn my day around are my favorite people! I love running into my co-residents! I also love little happy notes left on a desk or fun messages of encouragement over securechat!

Where could we find you when you are not at the hospital?
Right now you can mostly find me wedding planning! My fiance, Taylor, and I are getting married at the end of August. When I’m not doing that, my favorite things are visiting my family in Tupelo, and going to Bible study and small group!

What profession would you have chosen if you weren’t a physician?
I might have jumped into the family business if medicine had not worked out!
