The recent graduation ceremonies for our medical students were certainly different this year. The usual cheering and other outbursts were muffled by masks worn at some graduation exercises, while sporadic loud yells (or shouts) of excitement pierced through the masks at other ceremonies. Some attendees screamed, clapped, and whistled –– despite instructions to maintain a solemn demeanor until the designated time.
Dr. Visnu Garla, Associate Professor in the Division of Endocrinology, co-authored a paper out this month titled “Dapagliflozin in patients with cardiometabolic risk factors hospitalised with COVID-19 (DARE-19): a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 3 trial” in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology.

The Division of Digestive Diseases provides outstanding care to those with gastroenterology and hepatology-related diseases. Dr. Sarah Glover, Professor and Division Director, has bolstered the division’s research mission with her distinguished work in hereditary alpha tryptasemia syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease and most recently, COVID-19 and immunity.
UMMC has joined the Cardiometabolic Center Alliance (CMCA) as a Charter Member. Dr. Elizabeth Fryoux, Assistant Professor in the Divisions of General Internal Medicine and Hospital Medicine, will serve as the Lead Physician.

Dr. Jasmine Kency has been named the Faculty Lead for Medicine Grand Rounds. Dr. Kency is an Assistant Professor in the both the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics. She completed her undergraduate degree at Spellman College, medical degree from the University of South Alabama, and residency in medicine-pediatrics at UMMC. After a year as chief resident in Pediatrics, Dr. Kency joined faculty in the Division of General Internal Medicine.
Dr. Justin M. Turner, alumnus of the internal medicine residency program, talks about what drew him back to his home state for residency training, why he remains here today, and what he loves about UMMC.
We welcomed 40 interns and 31 fellows to the Department of Medicine this month. This includes 26 categorical, 5 medicine-pediatrics, 4 preliminary, 2 preventive medicine, and 3 dermatology interns. In addition, 58 interns will spend anywhere from 6-12 months on rotations with the Department.
