Dr. Michael R. McMullan has been named Associate Dean for Student Affairs for the School of Medicine.
Dr. McMullan is a cum laude graduate of the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he also completed his internal medicine residency, chief residency, and cardiology fellowship training. He subsequently completed advanced training at Duke University in both adult congenital and valvular heart disease and in interventional cardiology.
Dr. McMullan returned to UMMC after fellowship and established the adult congenital heart disease program at the University Heart while serving as director for the Introduction to Clinical Medicine course and as program director for cardiology fellowship. He also served as a member of the School of Medicine Curriculum Committee.
In 2007, Dr. McMullan moved to private practice with the Jackson Heart Clinic. He returned to UMMC in 2014 as Professor of Medicine and director of the adult congenital heart disease program, the only program of its kind in the state of Mississippi. Under his leadership, the program became one of the first seven ACGME-accredited training programs nationwide. He has served as Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs for the Department of Medicine before being named as the Division Director of Cardiology and the Director of the Cardiovascular Service Line.
Dr. McMullan has served as Governor of the MS chapter for the American College of Cardiology. He is listed in the Best Doctors in America and was named as one of Mississippi’s Healthcare Heroes for 2015.
Dr. McMullan has a heart for students and for teaching. The Evers Society has selected him as an All Star Professor on multiple occasions. He has been inducted into the Evers Society Hall of Fame. He was selected as a member of the Blake Academy for Excellence in Teaching, as the Teacher of the Year for the Department of Medicine in 2000, and as the UMMC Clinical Professor of the Year in 2005. He has been previously selected for the Nelson Order by graduating medical school classes and was recently awarded the Trailblazer Teaching Award. He has served as a mentor for medical students in the Evers House since implementation of the House System in 2014.
Congratulations to Dr. McMullan on his success and his new leadership role in the School of Medicine. He will continue to serve his leadership role as the Division Director of Cardiology and the Director of the Cardiovascular Service Line.
