I matched in internal medicine at Tulane where I completed my intern year and then transferred to UMMC to finish out my residency with Jordan who will be starting his Cardiology fellowship this month. We just welcomed our first child, Caroline Mattison in April and we love going on walks with her and our maltipoo, Roux.

During this time, I have become a father to a 3 year-old girl, and continue to learn about fatherhood. Clinically, I have interests in pulmonary vascular diseases, interventional pulmonology, shock, and point-of-care ultrasound.

What are you most looking forward to working at UMMC? I look forward to continuing to work with my mentors and also teaching residents and fellows.

Shahzeb Khan, MD

Dr. Shahzeb Khan

Residency: Internal Medicine Residency at Cook County Hospital, Chicago

Division: Hospital Medicine

Tell us about yourself: I graduated from Dow Medical College, Pakistan in 2016. Subsequently I did my Internal Medicine Training at Cook County Hospital, Chicago from 2017-2020. Simultaneously, I completed my Masters of Clinical Sciences from Rush University Medical Center (2019-2020). I am a strong proponent of “an ounce of data is worth a thousand pounds of opinion.” I enjoy doing research – I have >150 publications. My areas of interest are heart failure, meta-analyses, and the conduct and interpretation of clinical trials.  Outside the medicine and research world, I enjoy playing table tennis, scrabble and cricket. I have represented my city in Pakistan in all of the aforementioned games. I also like travelling to different places – however, that is at a halt for now.

What are you most looking forward to working at UMMC? Getting to know the culture of Jackson, MS and interacting with my amazing colleagues.

Zack Knott, MD

Dr. Zack Knott

Hometown: Monroe, LA

Residency: Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, UMMC

Division: Hospital Medicine

Tell us about yourself. I grew up in Louisiana, went to Mississippi State for undergrad in Biological Engineering, then went back to Louisiana for medical school at LSU-Shreveport. I found that I did not want to give up treating either children or adults, and was drawn to hospital medicine, so I was very happy to have matched at UMMC for Med/Peds residency! I have a strong interest in evidence-based medicine, emerging technologies such as POCUS, and I try to listen to far too many podcasts. Outside of medicine, I am an amateur woodworker and enjoy making custom pens, as well as attempting various DIY projects around my home.

What are you most looking forward to working at UMMC?  I’m looking forward to continuing to see all the current and upcoming residents and students progress through their training and helping to foster that experience.

In my spare time I like to cook and I’m trying to build a habit of leisure reading. I’m also a bit of a coffee fanatic.

Chief Residency: Pediatrics, UMMC

Division: General Internal Medicine and Hospital Medicine

Tell us about yourself: I have been at UMMC for quite a while, having done my medical school and residency here, so it’s pretty obvious that I love it here.  I’m very close to my family, so I spend a lot of my free time either hanging out with them or reading. I’m a bit of a nerd and a HUGE Marvel movie fan (even though Superman is my favorite superhero). I love to teach and am super-excited to start working.

What are you most looking forward to working at UMMC?  I’m excited about quite a bit, but mostly for the opportunity to still teach residents and students while caring for the population of my home state.
