Collaboration is key: Cardiology and hepatology Team Up to create a Multidisciplinary fontan clinic

A monthly Fontan clinic was initiated at University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in January of 2021. The goal of this clinic is to offer comprehensive care for the Adult Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) patients who have a history of undergoing palliative Fontan surgery as a child and are at increased risk for developing Fontan Associated Liver Disease (FALD) as they progress into adulthood. During the clinic visit, the patient is evaluated by the adult CHD specialist together with a hepatologist, which allows seamless integration of care for these patients through a multidisciplinary approach. This clinic also offers all testing related to the patient’s cardiac and liver disease to be performed on the same day. This is especially convenient for the many patients who travel long distances to seek medical care for their CHD at UMMC.
