Dr. Michael Hall, Associate Professor of Medicine and Associate Division Director of Cardiovascular Diseases, has been appointed Interim Chair of Medicine effective March 1, 2022.

Dr. Hall will succeed Dr. Javed Butler, who has served as chair and professor of the department since November 2017. Dr. Hall, whose professional interests include hypertension, heart failure, advanced cardiovascular imaging, and obesity-induced cardiovascular and renal disease, received his medical degree from UMMC in 2005, where he also completed residency training in internal medicine.

After his residency, Dr. Hall participated in the physician-scientist pathway in cardiovascular research in the UMMC Department of Physiology and Biophysics. He then completed cardiology fellowship training at UMMC and a cardiovascular imaging fellowship at Wake Forest University, where he also earned a master’s degree in clinical and population translational sciences.

At UMMC, Dr. Hall also holds faculty appointments in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, and in the Department of Radiology. In addition to serving as associate division director for the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases, he holds many leadership roles, including director of clinical and population science in the Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research; associate program director of the Cardiology Fellowship Program; and cardiac imaging director for the Cardiovascular Service Line.

Dr. Hall holds editorial positions with a variety of professional journals and is the lead author or co-author on more than 120 published research manuscripts, as well as a dozen book chapters. He is an investigator on numerous active NIH research grants. Among his many honors are the 2019 Gold Award for Research, Office of Sponsored Programs; and the 2018 Department of Medicine Exemplary Research Award.
