Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Sarah Gaugler

Dr. Sarah Gaugler completed internal medicine residency and was a chief resident at UMMC. Here, she shares some of her favorite memories from training and what she’s up to now.

First tell us about you and your time at UMMC.

I am originally from Tampa, Florida and went to the University of South Florida for undergrad and Nova Southeastern University for medical school. I was an Internal Medicine resident at UMMC from 2010-2013 and a chief resident from 2013-2014. My husband Drew was a general surgery resident from 2009-2014.

Where are you now and what are you doing?

We are currently living in Tampa, FL and working in Lakeland, FL. We have two boys, Tripp (9) and John (7). I am working as a hospitalist and serve as the chair of internal medicine and the associate medical director of the hospitalist medicine service. We have a lot of exciting things happening at Lakeland Regional and are beginning an Internal Medicine Residency in 2023 where I will be participating as core faculty.

What do you miss most about UMMC?

The people! I am grateful for the lifelong friendships I made during my time there. I keep in touch regularly with several friends from my residency class. Our shared experiences and similar clinical practices make these friends extra-special and able to understand you in a unique way. Traveling together and watching our kids become friends has been an added bonus.

Share a memory or more of your time here at UMMC.

There are so many…from the bowling tournament, to recruitment dinners, to random all-nighters on call. I look back on my time at UMMC with great fondness. I am especially thankful for the training I received and for all of the admirable mentors I had which have allowed me to be so successful today!
