Resident Spotlight: Dr. Kyle Clay

Meet Dr. Kyle Clay, native Iowan, PGY-3 in internal medicine, and goldendoodle parent. Here, Dr. Clay shares his path to UMMC and a little bit about what he has learned along the way.

Tell us about you.

I grew up in Ankeny, Iowa, a suburb outside of Des Moines. I went to Wartburg College and then American University of the Caribbean for medical school, where I met my wife, Lauren. She is a third-year ER resident. We have a 1-year-old goldendoodle named Piper.

Why did you choose UMMC for residency?

We chose UMMC because the residency program felt like a small, tight-knit community while still having the opportunity to train in a large, diverse academic setting.

What is one thing you would tell the incoming interns about what is to come?

You will experience some of the hardest and scariest moments of your life during your first year of residency. But at the end of the day, you will get through it and be stronger and more confident because of it.

What could you give a presentation on with absolutely no preparation?

Major US airline fleet strategies.

What are some small things that make your day better?

Definitely fresh coffee.

Where could we find you when you are not at the hospital?

Spending time at home with my wife and dog!

What profession would you have chosen if you weren’t a physician?

Easy, a veterinarian. Ideally, at a zoo, taking care of cool animals like elephants, giraffes, and lions.
