Dr. Yousaf Zafar is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine. Here, he shares a bit about what he does, his path to UMMC, and what he does to de-stress outside of the hospital.

What is your professional background?

I grew up in Dubai, UAE but went to medical school in Lahore, Pakistan. After graduating from CMH Lahore Medical College, I was very fortunate to train at the University of Missouri Kansas City Internal Medicine Residency Program. Before joining UMMC, I also completed a chief resident year at Naples Community Hospital in Florida.

Tell us about what you do at UMMC.

I am one of the two nocturnists in the Department of Medicine and have been working in this position for the past 3 years. I am also completing a master’s in clinical investigation degree here at UMMC.

What advice would you give to someone pursuing medicine today?

It is a competitive field and it’s important to set goals. However, I would advise them not to be too hard on themselves if these goals are not met. Keep trying but not at the expense of mental well-being. When not working on career goals, one should exercise, read a book or develop a hobby!

What do you like most about UMMC?

I love the people I work with and how everyone works together to make it a better place to work .

Tell us something about yourself that people may not know.

I absolutely love Bollywood music. I listen to it when I want to de-stress!
