Dr. Calvin Thigpen awarded Mastership in the American College of Physicians

Dr. Samuel “Calvin” Thigpen was awarded Mastership in the American College of Physicians (ACP). Mastership is awarded to ACP Fellows who have shown “integrity, positions of honor, impact in practice or in medical research, or other attainments in science or in the art of medicine.” Masters must be highly accomplished persons demonstrating impact in practice, leadership, or in medical research. Thigpen is the 11th Mississippian to gain this honor (full list below).

Dr. Thigpen is Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine, Internal Medicine Residency Program Director, and Vice Chair of Education for the Department of Medicine. He received his BS in chemistry and math in 1999 from the University of Mississippi and a BA in philosophy and psychology in 2001 from the University of Oxford in Oxford, England, where he spent two years as a Rhodes Scholar.  He then returned to Mississippi and earned his MD in 2005 from UMMC. He completed his internal medicine residency in 2008, chief residency in 2009, and hematology/oncology fellowship in 2012, all at UMMC. He has previously served as Mississippi ACP Governor.
