Fellow Focus: Dr. Maneesh Mannem

Get to know Dr. Maneesh Mannem, PGY-4 fellow in Rheumatology. A native of India, Dr. Mannem shares his love of cricket, rheumatology, and UMMC.

First, tell us about you.

I am a first year Rheumatology fellow here at UMMC. I am originally from Southern India. I did medical school at Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad, India. I completed internal medicine residency at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Permian Basin in Odessa, Texas. In my free time, I play tennis and pickleball. I like to explore new places, learn about their unique culture, history, and natural beauty. So far, I’ve had the opportunity to visit 16 different states in the United States. I met my wife, Spandana, last year, and we tied the knot in March 2023.

When did you know you wanted to pursue rheumatology?

In my first year of residency, I was fortunate to connect with an inspirational rheumatologist who became my mentor. He spent a good amount of time with me talking about the new biologic medications and helped me in understanding how these medications and close monitoring have significantly changed the patient’s quality of life in the last few years. I observed how patients and rheumatologists had such close bonds and decided to pursue rheumatology by the end of my second year residency.

What do you like most about UMMC?

The diversity of disease presentations among the patients here has provided me with valuable opportunities for learning and growth. The staff at UMMC are friendly and supportive, creating a good learning environment.

What advice would you give to the interns?

While cases here can be complex and challenging at times, we have an exceptional team of staff to provide guidance and support.

What could you give a 40 minute presentation on without preparation?

I can discuss the sport “cricket” comprehensively, including its various formats, teams, players, rules, World Cup records, and rankings. I began playing cricket at the age of 3, and in the fifth grade, I received the first prize for an essay I wrote in my second language, Hindi, about my favorite sport.

What is something you wish you knew more about?

I find enjoyment in playing a variety of sports, including cricket, tennis, pickleball, soccer, and basketball. However, I wish I were familiar with American football, as it would allow me to connect with more people in this community.

What are some small things that make your day better?

Rain, a cool breeze, walking in a park, helping people and talking to my mother are some of the things that brighten my day.

Tell us something about you that most people don’t know.

I excel at preparing Indian cuisine, a skill I began developing after relocating to the US. I honed my culinary abilities by learning from my mother, following YouTube tutorials, and seeking guidance from friends. I’ve received some of the best compliments, such as ‘You could open a restaurant’ and ‘The taste brings back memories of home’.
