Intern Spotlight: Dr. Jonathan Dismukes

Get to know Dr. Jonathan Dismukes, Alabama native, internal medicine intern, and baker extraordinaire. Here, he shares his path to Mississippi, advice for future interns, and what makes him tick.

Tell us about you.

I am from Mobile, AL, and went to Auburn for college. I attended UAB for medical school.

Why did you choose UMMC for residency?

I chose UMMC because I wanted an academic / university-based hospital in the Southeast that is committed to serving some of the sickest patients in the country. After residency, I knew that I would be prepared to care for nearly any patient presentation – regardless of the complexity.

What is one thing you would tell the incoming interns about what is to come?

Intern year is stressful, regardless of location / specialty. However, the UMMC IM program is devoted to both your personal and professional success, which has made this year enjoyable. I can’t believe how fast it has passed and how much I have grown along the way.

What could you give a 40-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?

How to make quality espresso, personal finance recommendations, why you should visit San Sebastian (Spain)….a lot of random things.

What are some small things that make your day better?

I love learning about my patients – the random connections, stories from the past, or shared pieces of advice. They are often very appreciative that you ask personal questions and are invested in them and their care.

Where could we find you when you are not at the hospital?

I tend to be a homebody. Often, I’m cooking a meal, sitting outside by the fire, or watching something on TV. That said, I enjoy having friends over to grill and hangout – anyone is welcome!

What profession would you have chosen if you weren’t a physician?

I’d likely be in business or finance. Since I do have an MBA, there’s still a chance I combine this with medicine and end up in hospital leadership or administration down the road.
