Fellow Focus: Dr. Trest Underwood

Meet Dr. Trest Underwood, Mississippi native, pulmonary/critical care PGY-IV fellow, and football fan.

First, tell us about you.

I am originally from Seminary, MS. I went to medical school at VCOM – Auburn, and completed internal medicine residency at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, MS. I am married and we have two fur babies, Sadie Belle and Daisy Mae.

When did you know you wanted to pursue pulmonary/critical care?

I have always been fascinated by respiratory physiology. Prior to going to medical school, I worked as a Respiratory Therapist for several years and had the privilege of taking care of many patients with lung issues, growing my interest even more. Throughout medical school and residency, my interest in the area continued to grow exponentially.

What do you like most about UMMC?

I love being able to give back to the people of my home state of Mississippi. Everyone has been incredibly welcoming and itโ€™s a great environment for learning.

What advice would you give to the interns?

You are being gifted several years where your sole priority is learning as much as you can. So embrace the time, make the most out of every patient encounter, push yourself, challenge the others around you, and learn something new every day.

What could you give a 40 minute presentation on without preparation?

An in-depth review of the TV series The Office

What is something you wish you knew more about?

Culinary Arts.. aka how to cook

What are some small things that make your day better?

A football game on when I get home

Tell us something about you that most people donโ€™t know.

I can play the guitar. I used to be in a band called Blackhawk. I was real close to being a Rockstarโ€ฆ not really, but I can pick and grin.
