Dr. Newton B. Wiggins has joined UMMC as Section Chief of Electrophysiology in the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases. Dr. Wiggins earned his medical degree from the University of Mississippi Medical Center, followed by internal medicine residency at Duke University. He completed fellowships in Cardiovascular Medicine and Cardiac Electrophysiology at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, serving as Chief Fellow during both fellowships. Dr. Wiggins joins UMMC from The Chattanooga Heart Institute in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he practiced for eight years.

An expert in electrophysiology, Dr. Wiggins has helped author expert consensus statements about stroke risk reduction and has demonstrated a strong commitment to professional leadership in the field of cardiology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a Fellow of the Heart Rhythm Society. Within the American College of Cardiology, he has held several leadership roles, including Chair of the Early Career Leadership Council and member of both the Section Steering Committee and the Board of Governors. He also completed the ACC Leadership Accelerator program. His clinical research experience, professional leadership, and national involvement in cardiology will be valuable assets to our department and institution.
