UMMC Department of Medicine and American College of Physicians (ACP) hosted the 2021 ACP Abstract Day on October 28th. Ninety posters and six oral presentations were delivered by students, residents, and fellows from UMMC and statewide.
Sarah Glover and colleagues receive $2.99 million grant from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. The project, entitled “A Global Pediatric Cell Atlas of Nasal and Oral Mucosa” seeks to understand the nasopharyngeal and oral mucosa in children living within globally representative communities.

Dr. Visnu Garla, Associate Professor in the Division of Endocrinology, co-authored a paper out this month titled “Dapagliflozin in patients with cardiometabolic risk factors hospitalised with COVID-19 (DARE-19): a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 3 trial” in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology.
Dr. Himmat Brar, internal medicine PGY-2 resident and Dr. Jannat Kang, internal medicine PGY-1 resident, recently presented their abstract virtually at the national American College of Physicians (ACP) meeting, taking home top honors in the “Best Research Abstract” category.
Dr. Leandro Mena is a clinician-researcher and public health advocate with expertise in the prevention and clinical management of sexually transmitted infections and the human immunodeficiency virus. He is the founding chair of the Department of Population Health Science at UMMC and Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases. Dr. Mena directs the Center for HIV/AIDS Research, Education & Policy at the Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute for Elimination of Health Disparities, and serves as the STD Medical Director for the state of Mississippi.
Dr. Patricia Stewart, Associate Professor and Fellowship Program Director of Allergy and Immunology, is leading a research project focused on improving asthma control. The study will use a remote monitoring protocol and will be in collaboration with UMMC’s Telemedicine Center of Excellence and the Health Resources and Services Administration.
