What is your professional background?
I graduated from Ole Miss with a BS degree in biology. I then attended medical school at UMMC graduating in 2010 followed by a residency in Internal medicine and fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at UMM. I had always loved UMMC so much that I couldn’t imagine taking a job anywhere else. I have been on staff now for over three years now.
Tell us about what you do at UMMC.
I was originally hired by Dr. Tate Thigpen to practice mostly Medical Oncology with a focus in gynecologic malignancies. Dr. Thipgen is world- renowned for his work in GYN malignancies, and it was such an honor to be able to train under and work alongside him until his retirement. In addition to GYN malignancies, my focus has since expanded to include treating malignancies of the skin and GI tract. Most of my clinical responsibilities are in the outpatient setting, however I do spend a few months of the year attending Oncology Wards. In addition to my clinical duties, I have greatly enjoyed serving as the Associate Program Director for our fellowship for the last two years.
What advice would you give to someone pursuing medicine today?
I would encourage any interested in pursuing medicine to keep an open mind. Too often people have the mindset that they have to pursue a certain area of medicine because that is what a family member may have done. They are discouraged when they realize a lack the passion for it. I feel there is something in medicine for everyone, and you may miss what you truly love if you’re not willing to explore all the facets of it.
What do you like most about UMMC?
UMMC has so many brilliant and caring employees who are committed to giving the best care to patients. Within the Hematology/Oncology world, all of my colleagues have a unique set of skills and experiences. Our patients are rarely straightforward and to be able to put our heads together to devise a tailored plan for each person is so much fun. I love working as a team.
Tell us something about yourself that people may not know.
People that know me well say I have an old soul. I love to ride around with my family in our 1930 Model A Ford that my husband surprised me with for my birthday. It won 2nd place in the Antique and Classic Car Show at the State Fair last year, and my husband and I fight over the trophy!
