Dr. Frederick H. Asher has been named Division Director for the Division of Hospital Medicine in the Department of Medicine.

He completed medical school at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in 2002 and internal medicine residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 2005.  He worked as a Hospitalist at Ochsner Hospital in New Orleans for three years before returning to UMMC.  Dr. Asher has served as a hospitalist since the creation of UMMC’s Division of Hospital Medicine and has been instrumental in its guidance and growth. He enjoys being a part of student and resident education and serves as the Assistant Clerkship Director.  He has a strong interest in quality improvement and has served on several QI committees addressing projects such as length of stay, communication, and documentation.  Dr. Asher is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.

As interim Division Director, Dr. Asher was instrumental in UMMC’s response to COVID-19 this past year. Our hospitalists, under his leadership, were pivotal in the medical center’s response to the overwhelming volume that came with the pandemic.  Dr. Asher will continue in his role as the Inpatient Services Director for the Department of Medicine.
