A stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) can be emotionally and physically draining. Post-intensive care syndrome is a term that describes the cognitive, psychological, physical and other impairments that affect ICU survivors and prevents them from living life as they were prior to their critical illness. It has been shown that a multidisciplinary management plan can improve the long-term functioning capacity and quality of life of the ICU survivors and also their families, which is why UMMC started the ICU Recovery Clinic in 2020. This clinic is the only of its kind in Mississippi and takes a multidisciplinary approach to healing. The clinic team, which includes pulmonary/critical care physicians, critical care pharmacists, acute care physical and occupational therapists, works to maximize recovery in those who have survived critical illness.
