Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Clark Cutrer

Hear from Dr. Clark Cutrer – UMMC alumnus, Mississippi native, and Tennessee hematologist. Here, he shares about his time at UMMC, his growing family, and what he’s up to now.

First tell us about you and your time at UMMC.

My name is Clark Cutrer and I spent 10 years at UMMC, including 4 years of medical school, 3 years of internal medicine residency, and 3 years of Hematology/Oncology fellowship. During that time I met and married my lovely wife, Alyson. We celebrated 6 years of marriage this past July. We also had our first child, Raleigh, during my fellowship and he recently turned 3. Shortly before we moved we found out we were pregnant with our second, Grace, who just turned 1.

Where are you now and what are you doing?

After fellowship, my family and I moved to Knoxville, TN (you can blame Lucas Buchanan) and I took a job at the UT Medical Center in Knoxville doing primarily malignant hematology with a focus in leukemia and myeloid disorders. I work with our residents and have been involved with the new hematology/oncology fellowship, which is now in its 2nd year.

What do you miss most about UMMC?

What I miss most about UMMC is definitely the people. I know this is the generic answer but now having been gone for coming up on 2 years, this is more true now than ever. There’s nothing like going to get a cup of coffee at Cups for the post-lunch pick-me-up and running into Lyssa Weatherly and her medicine team or Keith Mansel and the palliative care team. I could name drop all day but really and truly there is no substitute or comparison for the people and culture at the U.

Whew. Where to start? One that comes to mind is from my PGY-2 year on Cardiology wards. It was early in the year and our team consisted of Jeremy Courtney, Andrew Brown, Natalie Malcom and myself, so safe to say – pretty stacked team (myself not included). At one point we had a patient who we had all grown attached to and was very sick in the CVICU and it was coming up on her birthday. She didn’t seem to have much family around so Natalie had the idea to throw her a birthday party in her room. We got balloons, party hats and birthday cake and surprised her on rounds with a “Happy Birthday.” Natalie was actually off that day but came in for the party. I felt like this is the perfect encapsulation of the UMMC experience – friends coming together to first and foremost take care of patients, but also making it the most enjoyable time possible.
