Intern Spotlight: Dr. Santana Holloway

Get to know Dr. Santana Holloway – Mississippi native, internal medicine intern, and plant parent.

First,tell us about you.

I grew up in Columbia, MS! For undergrad, I went to Mississippi State University where I studied Biomedical Engineering, and after graduation, I moved to Jackson for medical school at UMMC.

Why did you choose UMMC for residency?

The people. From rotating on internal medicine as a 3rd year medical student to every subsequent encounter, I’ve always felt included and considered part of the team. I knew that training at UMMC would challenge me to grow as a physician while feeling supported along the way.

What is one thing you would tell the incoming interns about what is to come?

Embrace a growth mindset – intern year will be challenging yet so rewarding! You will have all the support and resources you need to succeed.

What could you give a 40-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?

Gardening or really anything to do with plants!

What are some small things that make your day better?

Forming connections with my patients, being greeted by my dogs after work, avoiding rush hour on Lakeland Drive

Where could we find you when you are not at the hospital?

Hanging out with my dogs, tending to plants, or working in my yard

What profession would you have chosen if you weren’t a physician?

If I was not a physician, I’d likely own a nursery/garden center or be an interior designer
