Dr. Rochelle Thompson Kolawole, PGY-3 categorical resident in internal medicine, was born in Liberia but grew up in six different countries around Africa. She is a mom to a little boy and wife to Dr. John (Olu) Kolawole, a second-year cardiology fellow at UMMC. After graduation, Dr. Thompson Kolawole will begin a combined fellowship in Infectious Diseases/Critical Care. Here, she shares about her love of her family, all things travel, and UMMC.
Dr. Leandro Mena is a clinician-researcher and public health advocate with expertise in the prevention and clinical management of sexually transmitted infections and the human immunodeficiency virus. He is the founding chair of the Department of Population Health Science at UMMC and Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases. Dr. Mena directs the Center for HIV/AIDS Research, Education & Policy at the Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute for Elimination of Health Disparities, and serves as the STD Medical Director for the state of Mississippi.
Dr. Patricia Stewart, Associate Professor and Fellowship Program Director of Allergy and Immunology, is leading a research project focused on improving asthma control. The study will use a remote monitoring protocol and will be in collaboration with UMMC’s Telemedicine Center of Excellence and the Health Resources and Services Administration.
Congratulations to Dr. Ervin Fox for reaching the 20 year mark for service to the institution. Dr. Fox is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology and Medical Director of the Clinical Noninvasive Laboratory for cardiac testing. Dr. Fox received his undergraduate degree from Mississippi State University and medical degree from UMMC. He completed residency at Washington University and cardiology fellowship at Tulane University, where he was chief fellow. He then completed a clinical and research echocardiography fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital and also holds a Masters in Public Health from Harvard School of Public Health.
Congratulations to the Department of Medicine for being awarded both M3 and M4 Department of the Year by the Carl G. Evers Society. The Department of Medicine has won these awards for 18 of the past 20 years. This recognition is confirmation of the department’s commitment to education and a direct result of the efforts of our faculty, staff, and trainees.
The Alpha Mississippi Chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Society inducted their 2021 initiates on April 13th. Students, residents, and faculty are chosen based on their academic and professional achievement, leadership, service to others, and a commitment to scholarly and personal excellence.
