We welcomed 56 interns and 26 fellows to the Department of Medicine this month. This includes 25 categorical, 2 primary care, 5 medicine-pediatrics, and 24 additional preliminary or rotating interns who will spend anywhere from 6-12 months in the Department.

Dr. Schaefer joined UMMC in early 2020. He completed his internal medicine training at York Hospital in York, PA, and his gastroenterology training at Johns Hopkins (Baltimore, MD). Since completing his gastroenterology training, he has served in leadership positions in a variety of private and academic gastroenterology practices.

Dr. Michael R. McMullan has been named Associate Dean for Student Affairs for the School of Medicine. Dr. McMullan is a cum laude graduate of the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he also completed his internal medicine residency, chief residency, and cardiology fellowship training. He subsequently completed advanced training at Duke University in both adult congenital and valvular heart disease and in interventional cardiology.
Congratulations to the Department of Medicine for being awarded both M3 and M4 Department of the Year by the Carl G. Evers Society. The Department of Medicine has won these awards for over 10 years in a row! This is a true testament to the department’s commitment to education and a direct result of the efforts of our faculty, staff, and trainees. Many thanks to those faculty members who are directly involved in medical student education, specifically Dr. Michelle Horn, who serves as Director of Student Education and Clerkships for the Department and Jennifer Chappell, Program Administrator.
