Dr. Jasmine Kency has been named the Faculty Lead for Medicine Grand Rounds. Dr. Kency is an Assistant Professor in the both the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics. She completed her undergraduate degree at Spellman College, medical degree from the University of South Alabama, and residency in medicine-pediatrics at UMMC. After a year as chief resident in Pediatrics, Dr. Kency joined faculty in the Division of General Internal Medicine.

Dr. Zeb Henson was awarded the top awards from both the School of Medicine and the Department of Medicine this year. He was named Clinical Professor of the Year, which is selected by the senior class and given to the clinical professor who fosters learning, exhibits exceptional teaching, and inspires the class to strive for excellence in and out of the classroom. Dr. Henson was also awarded 2021 Department of Medicine Teacher of the Year by the internal medicine residency program.

Dr. Zeb Henson has been appointed UMMC’s Associate Chief of Staff effective June 1, 2021. He joined the UMMC faculty in 2009 and currently is an Associate Professor of Medicine and the Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Residency Program Director. As a clinician, teacher, and mentor, Dr. Henson is respected, inspirational, well-rounded, and perfectly suited for this role.

The Carl G. Evers Awards are voted on by the medical school classes and are awarded annually. The Department of Medicine has won “best clinical department” 18 of the past 20 years! Congratulations to all who were awarded this year!

The Alpha Mississippi Chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Society inducted their 2021 initiates on April 13th. Students, residents, and faculty are chosen based on their academic and professional achievement, leadership, service to others, and a commitment to scholarly and personal excellence.

Dr. Savannah Duckworth was awarded the Trailblazer of the Year award by the School of Medicine’s Office of Medical Education. This award honors one faculty member on campus who demonstrates commitment to excellence and innovation in undergraduate medical education.

Dr. Jessica (Jessie) Lavender has been named Director of the Primary Care Track for the internal medicine residency program. Dr. Lavender is an Assistant Professor in General Internal Medicine and Hypertension. She completed medical school, internal medicine residency, and chief residency at UMMC. As a resident, she was chosen as “Resident of the Year” by the Evers medical student society.

Get to know Dr. Morgan McLeod, Assistant Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics. Dr. McLeod practices inpatient and outpatient adult and pediatric medicine and hosts the “Kids and Teens” radio show every Thursday on Mississippi Public Broadcasting.

Dr. Michelle Horn has been named Division Director of General Internal Medicine and Hypertension. Dr. Horn obtained her BS in Chemistry from Millsaps College and then completed medical school, Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residency, and a Pediatrics Chief Resident year here at UMMC.

Dr. Calvin Thigpen has been named Vice Chair of Education for the Department of Medicine.
Dr. Thigpen received his BS in chemistry and math from the University of Mississippi and a BA in philosophy and psychology in 2001 from the University of Oxford in Oxford, England, where he spent two years as a Rhodes Scholar. He then returned to Mississippi…
