Congratulations to many members of the Department who were recognized with nominations for Pillars Awards this year. The Pillars Recognition of Service and Inclusive Excellence Awards acknowledge the work of faculty and trainees who work to further diversity and a “climate of inclusion” at UMMC and within the surrounding community.

Dr. Andy Wilhelm has been named Associate Division Director of the Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine Division. Dr. Wilhelm completed his medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency and chief residency at UMMC in internal medicine. He completed Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Dr. Richard Wells, faculty member in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine, is one of the many members in our department who has worked tirelessly in our ICUs to care for COVID patients over the past year. Trey Abraham and Michal Senitko recently published the article “Feasibility of Using the O-Arm Imaging System During ENB-rEBUS-guided Peripheral Lung Biopsy: A Dual-center Experience” in the Journal of Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology. The Class of 2018 Pulmonary Training Fund endowment was established by Dr. Bobby Tullos with a generous gift of $30,000. It is for the Department of Medicine’s Pulmonary and Critical Care Division, for the purpose of training pulmonary fellows in the area of advanced airway management, ultrasound, bronchoscopy procedures, and other specialized pulmonary medical care. The fund will also support pulmonary fellows who attend courses that are not available at UMMC facilities.

The Department of Medicine’s Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine, has formed a Section of Interventional Pulmonology (IP). Dr. Michal Senitko, Assistant Professor of Medicine and Surgery will serve as the inaugural section chief. The Interventional Pulmonology service at UMMC was created over 3 years ago by Dr. Senitko and Dr. George E. “Trey” Abraham III.
