Vikas Majithia, MD, MPH, Professor of Medicine and Division Director of Rheumatology, will be leaving UMMC next month. We appreciate his 20 years of service to UMMC. In light of his leaving, the following appointments have been made in the Department:
– Gailen Marshall to serve as interim Division Director of Rheumatology
– Jimmy Stewart appointed Vice Chair of Faculty Development for the Department of Medicine
– John Spurzem named Chair of the Department of Medicine Promotion and Tenure Committee

Get to know Dr. Rajesh Bhagat, faculty in Pulmonary and Critical Care. A seasoned educator and clinician, Dr. Bhagat is the Director of the MICU at the VA Hospital.
Dr. Jessie Harvey has been named Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit. Dr. Harvey is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine. She completed medical school, internal medicine residency, and pulmonary and critical care fellowship at UMMC.

Dr. Andy Wilhelm has been named Division Director of the Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine Division. Dr. Wilhelm follows in the footsteps of Dr. John R. Spurzem, a leader in the department who has served as the Division Director of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine for 11 years.
The Carl G. Evers Awards are voted on by the medical school classes and are awarded annually. The Department of Medicine has won “best clinical department” 18 of the past 20 years! Congratulations to all who were awarded this year!

The Pillars Recognition of Service and Inclusive Excellence Awards acknowledge the work of faculty and trainees who work to further diversity and a “climate of inclusion” at UMMC and within the surrounding community.

Dr. Wilhelm completed his medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency and chief residency at UMMC in internal medicine. He completed Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Dr. Richard Wells, faculty member in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine, is one of the many members in our department who has worked tirelessly in our ICUs to care for COVID patients over the past year.
