Dr. Michael R. McMullan has been named Associate Dean for Student Affairs for the School of Medicine. Dr. McMullan is a cum laude graduate of the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he also completed his internal medicine residency, chief residency, and cardiology fellowship training. He subsequently completed advanced training at Duke University in both adult congenital and valvular heart disease and in interventional cardiology.
Dr. Pradeep Vaitla, MD FASN, has been appointed to the Pancreas Committee of Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN). In this role, Dr. Vaitla will represent Region 3, which includes Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Puerto Rico. The Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network is a unique public-private partnership that links all professionals involved in the U.S. donation and transplantation system.
UMMC is starting eight clinical trials in the next days and weeks related to COVID-19. Drs. Gailen Marshall and Jason Parham both are serving as principal investigators in several trials with many other faculty members also involved as co-investigators. The Department of Medicine has won these awards for over 10 years in a row! Gabriel Hernandez, MD FACC recently published the article “Heart transplantation and in‐hospital outcomes in adult congenital heart disease patients with Fontan: A decade nationwide analysis from 2004 to 2014” in the Journal of Cardiac Surgery.
