Dr. Michael R. McMullan has been named Associate Dean for Student Affairs for the School of Medicine. Dr. McMullan is a cum laude graduate of the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he also completed his internal medicine residency, chief residency, and cardiology fellowship training. He subsequently completed advanced training at Duke University in both adult congenital and valvular heart disease and in interventional cardiology.
Dr. Pradeep Vaitla, MD FASN, has been appointed to the Pancreas Committee of Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN). In this role, Dr. Vaitla will represent Region 3, which includes Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Puerto Rico. The Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network is a unique public-private partnership that links all professionals involved in the U.S. donation and transplantation system.
The Department takes on a major role in COVID-19 Clinical Trials
UMMC is starting eight clinical trials in the next days and weeks related to COVID-19. Drs. Gailen Marshall and Jason Parham both are serving as principal investigators in several trials with many other faculty members also involved as co-investigators. Congratulations to the Department of Medicine for being awarded both M3 and M4 Department of the Year by the Carl G. Evers Society. The Department of Medicine has won these awards for over 10 years in a row! This is a true testament to the department’s commitment to education and a direct result of the efforts of our faculty, staff, and trainees. Many thanks to those faculty members who are directly involved in medical student education, specifically Dr. Michelle Horn, who serves as Director of Student Education and Clerkships for the Department and Jennifer Chappell, Program Administrator.

Gabriel Hernandez, MD FACC recently published the article “Heart transplantation and in‐hospital outcomes in adult congenital heart disease patients with Fontan: A decade nationwide analysis from 2004 to 2014” in the Journal of Cardiac Surgery. Dr. Hernandez tells us about the paper, its findings and potential impact on adult congenital heart disease patients.
