Congratulations to the many trainees and faculty who presented or presided at the Southern Regional Meeting and Southern Society of General Internal Medicine meetings last month in New Orleans, Louisiana.

This month, we celebrate Black History Month by recognizing the first black male and female physician in the United States. Both of these historic physicians challenged prejudices present in the United States to become physicians and care for the underserved.

Dr. Meredith Sloan, PGY-4 in Pulmonary and Critical Care, has been selected to the ACP Council for Resident and Fellow Members. Seven trainees were chosen nationally to serve on the council for a 2-year term beginning in April 2022.

My husband asked after breakfast, “Why do you have to work today? Weren’t you on call last week?”  I was going to help out at the Jackson Free Clinic. Being at the JFC doesn’t feel like work. If you have ever been there, you know what I mean.

Dr. Gabriel Hernandez is a University Heart interventional cardiologist who specializes in advanced heart failure and transplant and serves as an associate program director for the cardiology fellowship program.

Dr. Zeb Henson has been appointed Chief of Medical Staff for the university. Henson, formerly the Associate Chief of Staff within the Office of the Chief Medical Officer, is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics and the Medicine/Pediatrics Residency Program Director.
