The Procedure Service was started in 2019 with 4 Hospital Medicine faculty and 1-2 rotating internal medicine residents. In its first 3 months, over 120 procedures were performed in the hospital. The goals of the service are to provide excellence in patient safety and quality of inpatient procedures, improve patient care by streamlining procedure availability, and decrease unnecessary length of stay from delayed procedures for hospitalized patients.

The Carl G. Evers Awards are voted on by the medical school classes and are awarded annually. The Department of Medicine has won “best clinical department” 18 of the past 20 years! Congratulations to all who were awarded this year!
When people look back on this year (or as they study our monochrome pictures hanging on the sixth floor wall), most will probably say “Oh, those were the COVID chiefs.” While they may be right, it’s a very dubious distinction to say the least. COVID-19 has certainly shaped our year in many ways, but we do not feel we let it define our year. To us, and to all of program leadership, it was even more important than ever that the education and wellness of our residents not get buried under the service demands the pandemic laid at our feet.
A native of Mississippi, Dr. Paul Dotherow is a PGY-4 Gastroenterology and Hepatology fellow in the Division of Digestive Diseases. Here, Dr. Dotherow shares about his hero, love of UMMC, and life with two cats.
