Dr. Pradeep Vaitla, MD FASN, has been appointed to the Pancreas Committee of Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN). In this role, Dr. Vaitla will represent Region 3, which includes Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Puerto Rico. The Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network is a unique public-private partnership that links all professionals involved in the U.S. donation and transplantation system.
UMMC is starting eight clinical trials in the next days and weeks related to COVID-19. Drs. Gailen Marshall and Jason Parham both are serving as principal investigators in several trials with many other faculty members also involved as co-investigators. Congratulations to the Department of Medicine for being awarded both M3 and M4 Department of the Year by the Carl G. Evers Society. Gabriel Hernandez, MD FACC recently published the article “Heart transplantation and ināhospital outcomes in adult congenital heart disease patients with Fontan: A decade nationwide analysis from 2004 to 2014” in the Journal of Cardiac Surgery. Dr. Hernandez tells us about the paper, its findings and potential impact on adult congenital heart disease patients.

Dr. Richard Wardrop, III has been selected to serve on the Internal Medicine Board of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and as a member of the ACP Education Committee.
Dr. Adrienne Tin recently joined the MIND Center and Division of Nephrology as an Associate Professor. She obtained her doctoral and post-doctoral training in epidemiology with a concentration in genetics at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Then she joined the faculty of the Department of Epidemiology at the Bloomberg School of Public Health prior to coming to UMMC.

Dr. Michal Senitko, Assistant Professor of Medicine and Surgery, has been named Co-Director of UMMC’s Cancer Center and Research Institute’s Lung Cancer Early Detection Program. Dr. Senitko completed his internal medicine residency and his pulmonary and critical care fellowship at UMMC. He also completed an additional interventional pulmonology fellowship at Yale University.
