Collaboration is key: Cardiology and hepatology Team Up to create a Multidisciplinary fontan clinic
A monthly Fontan clinic was initiated at University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in January of 2021. The goal of this clinic is to offer comprehensive care for the Adult Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) patients who have a history of undergoing palliative Fontan surgery as a child and are at increased risk for developing Fontan Associated Liver Disease (FALD) as they progress into adulthood.
Dr. Licy Yanes Cardozo has been named Director of Resident Research for the Internal Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Yanes Cardozo is an Associate Professor in both the Departments of Medicine and Molecular and Cell Biology. Dr. Yanes Cardozo has been awarded numerous accolades on campus, including the Department of Medicine Research Fellow Award, multiple Excellence in Research Awards, and the Stanley Chapman Young Investigator Award.
Resident Spotlight: Dr. Amor Royer
Dr. Amor Royer, PGY-3 in internal medicine, shares memories from training and his love for UMMC. A native of the US Virgin Islands, Dr. Royer shares about his interests and why he chose UMMC for training. Dr. Royer matched into Gastroenterology and Hepatology fellowship at the University of Louisville and will start July 2021.
Dr. Jessica (Jessie) Lavender has been named Director of the Primary Care Track for the internal medicine residency program. Dr. Lavender is an Assistant Professor in General Internal Medicine and Hypertension. She completed medical school, internal medicine residency, and chief residency at UMMC. As a resident, she was chosen as “Resident of the Year” by the Evers medical student society.

Get to know Dr. Murphy Hinson, PGY-5 cardiology fellow. Dr. Hinson completed internal medicine residency at UMMC and was a chief resident before entering cardiology fellowship. Here, he shares about his path to cardiology, his memorable month as a visiting student at UMMC, and his love of Mississippi.
UMMC Cardiologists went big for go red month
In addition to Black History Month, February was also Go Red for Women month. This campaign serves to increase awareness that 1 in 3 women die of cardiovascular disease. Throughout February, UMMC cardiologists, UMMC Women’s Heart Clinic and University Heart Valve Clinic were busy informing the public of the importance of cardiovascular disease, especially in women.
Dr. Frederick H. Asher has been named Division Director for the Division of Hospital Medicine in the Department of Medicine. He completed medical school at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in 2002 and internal medicine residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 2005.
