Dr. Amor Royer, PGY-3 in internal medicine, shares memories from training and his love for UMMC. A native of the US Virgin Islands, Dr. Royer shares about his interests and why he chose UMMC for training. Dr. Royer matched into Gastroenterology and Hepatology fellowship at the University of Louisville and will start July 2021.
Dr. Jessica (Jessie) Lavender has been named Director of the Primary Care Track for the internal medicine residency program. Dr. Lavender is an Assistant Professor in General Internal Medicine and Hypertension. She completed medical school, internal medicine residency, and chief residency at UMMC. As a resident, she was chosen as “Resident of the Year” by the Evers medical student society.

Here, he shares about his path to cardiology, his memorable month as a visiting student at UMMC, and his love of Mississippi.
In addition to Black History Month, February was also Go Red for Women month. This campaign serves to increase awareness that 1 in 3 women die of cardiovascular disease. Throughout February, UMMC cardiologists, UMMC Women’s Heart Clinic and University Heart Valve Clinic were busy informing the public of the importance of cardiovascular disease, especially in women.

Dr. Frederick H. Asher has been named Division Director for the Division of Hospital Medicine in the Department of Medicine. He completed medical school at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in 2002 and internal medicine residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 2005.

Dr. Kevin Sullivan, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Geriatrics and the MIND center. Here, he shares about his background, research interests, and recent work related to Alzheimer’s Disease and cognitive impairment.

Congratulations to many members of the Department who were recognized with nominations for Pillars Awards this year. The Pillars Recognition of Service and Inclusive Excellence Awards acknowledge the work of faculty and trainees who work to further diversity and a “climate of inclusion” at UMMC and within the surrounding community.
Dr. Andy Wilhelm has been named Associate Division Director of the Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine Division. Dr. Wilhelm completed his medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency and chief residency at UMMC in internal medicine. He completed Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Dr. Michelle Horn has been named Division Director of General Internal Medicine and Hypertension. Dr. Horn obtained her BS in Chemistry from Millsaps College and then completed medical school, Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residency, and a Pediatrics Chief Resident year here at UMMC.
